FAQ for SAM-Trackball for Mac

(Use your BACK button to return to the page you came from)

How to I properly use the iMate adapter?

I am looking for information on the computer system requirements for the Sam Trackball.

I'm trying to install the SAM Trackball on my Laptop. Can this be done?

Will my switch work with the SAM Trackball?

At times the cursor sticks on the screen and prevents movement in one direction.  The ball must be rotated out of plane to free up the cursor.  Also, the cursor will drift to the bottom of the screen on its own.

The cursor will only move from right to left not up and down.

My SAM buttons are swapped.

Will the SAM-trackball model H-19-USB work with my system?

I have been told that some hardware with USB connectors only work with the iMac.

I am familiar with the trackball, but need more information regarding the switch mechanism in order to receive purchase authorization.

When installing SAM trackball, will this "delete" or override other current drivers installed or cause a conflict?

Does the SAM Trackball work with USB for both platforms?

Can you use the SAM alone or do you have to have a switch attached?

My SAM is connected to a ADB to USB adapter. Do I need some sort of software?

What happens if I use the iMate adapter without the latest drivers?

Will I be able to use any software with the SAM or do I need adaptive software.

What is your repair policy concerning the SAM Trackball?

How do I properly use the iMate adapter?

First, you will need to install the iMate extensions.  The link to the extensions can be found at the bottom of the SAM-Trackball page on our CD or at our website.  Once installed, the extensions must be turned ON in both iMate Control and iMate USB Drivers.

When the computer is on, if you unplug the iMate and then plug it back in, you will receive an error message.  Do your connecting of iMate adapted devices while your computer is off.

I am looking for information on the computer system requirements for the Sam Trackball.

System requirements are from 286 PC's on up. From Windows 3.1  to Windows 2000 and all Mac's accepted.
---------------

The red "double click" button on the SAM trackball doesn't double click.  I guess problem #1 is not related to the trackball and problem #2 must be something wrong with our set up? What do you think?

Do you have the MacTRAC control panel installed?

Is the right (red) button definitely set for double-click in the control
panel?

I would agree that problem #1 is not related to the trackball, unless
the trackball is arbitrarily 'clicking' on its own somehow.
-----------------

I'm trying to install the SAM Trackball on my Laptop. Can this be done?

You will have to contact the computer manufacturer for information on how to disable your Track Pad or buy our
USB Adapter for $9. plus $5. shipping.
----------------

Will my switch work with the SAM Trackball?

That is the purpose of our SAM-Trackball.  SAM stands for Switch-Adapted Mouse device, and has 3 switch jacks for plugging in external 'clickers'.
--------------

At times the cursor sticks on the screen and prevents movement in one direction.  The ball must be rotated out of plane to free up the cursor.  Also, the cursor will drift to the bottom of the screen on its own.

This is a unique event. No one has ever had this happen before.
We think replacing is the best option.  Please ship, via UPS, to us, include this email.

We will replace ASAP.
------------------

The cursor will only move from right to left not up and down.

Sometimes during shipment, one of the rollers that supports the ball and sends info to the computer,
unseats.

Simply remove the 3 screws on the bottom of the unit, remove the lid, and after inspecting the
rollers to see how they fit, remove the ball, pop out the roller (in your case, the one closest to
the front) and pop it back in.

That should do it.  You can do this while it's plugged in and your computer is on.
--------------------

My SAM buttons are swapped.

There may be a 3rd party utility running. Look for any other program which fools with your buttons. Even a steering wheel will set them off. If so, uninstall the offending software.
-------------------

Will the SAM-trackball model H-19-USB work with my system?

Yes. In fact, I'm using it right now :)
-------------------

I have been told that some hardware with USB connectors only work with the iMac.

Should not be true.  USB is USB.  And Win98 has all the drivers.
-------------------

I am familiar with the trackball, but need more information regarding the switch mechanism in order to receive purchase authorization.

There are hundreds of switches that can plug into SAM, depending upon
the physical ability of the user.  We carry 3 switches, which you can
read about and see at our website below, along with info/picture of
SAM-Trackball.  Use the Site Map link at the top of the page.
---------------------

When installing SAM trackball, will this "delete" or override other current drivers installed or cause a conflict?

You do not need to install any software for the SAM-Trackball, just as the instructions and the disk
state.
---------------

Does the SAM Trackball work with USB for both platforms?

We already offer a SAM-Trackball for Mac - USB.  It also works on PC because Win 95 (more recent
versions) and Win98 already have USB support built in. We also offer USB adapters.
-------------

Can you use the SAM alone or do you have to have a switch attached?

Either SAM can be used completely by itself, using the built-in buttons.  Or you can use a switch
into either one as the mouse-click.  Or you can use just the switch, with special software, for
scanning.
------------

My SAM is connected to a ADB to USB adapter. Do I need some sort of software?

Your adapter is the iMate, yes? The latest drivers for the iMate *are* necessary.  Visit the
<http://www.griffintechnology> pages for their latest.
------------

What happens if I use the iMate adapter without the latest drivers?

You lose the ability to setup each button as you would like, and to have the buttons perform differently,
automatically, within different software.  Personally, we just like the right button as a double
click and the middle button as a drag-lock.  But some people like the right button as a
control-click, for contextual menus.
------------

Will I be able to use any software with the SAM or do I need adaptive software.

It plugs in as a regular mouse.  It also comes with some software that is useful for enhancing your cursors and button control.
------------

What is your repair policy concerning the SAM Trackball?

If it is less than a year old, we would repair for free.  If more than a
year old, it is a flat $55 which must accompany the unit, either in the
form of a check, a credit card # and exp. date, or a purchase order.

You must include a letter describing the problem along with your name/address/phone #.

How do I set up my SAM Trackball when it is not automatically recognized by Windows?

Click on Start then Settings then Control Panel, then Add New Hardware,
and say Next for everything until you come to a place where *you* can
choose the type of new device (don't let Windows search), then choose
Mouse, choose Standard, and on the right choose Standard PS2 or
Standard Serial (depending upon if you are using the adapter which was
included with the trackball, which we recommend, which plugs into a
round 6 pin port where your old mouse probably plugged into, unless..
you want to plug into serial port without using the adapter, then you
would add the Standard Serial).

Below are the same instructions in a step by step format:

Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add New Hardware

Next | Next - Windows will search for new hardware

Choose No - I want to choose from a list. Next

Select hardware type. Next

Select Manufacturer and Model

or Select - Standard     Standard Serial (for serial port)
Standard    Standard PS2 (for PS2 port)
 Next

Windows will load the correct driver.

You will have to Restart Windows.

Once started, Right Click on My Computer

Choose Properties | Device Manager

Scroll down to Mouse.

New driver should now be in the list.

Double click on the driver to check if it is working.
---------------

Where does my SAM plug into the computer?

SAM's plug into the PS2 Port (It plugs in as a regular mouse) or nine pin Serial Port if the user wants to use both their mouse and the trackball. It's preferable to only use the SAM on your system.

Windows will then sense the new hardware on it's own.

Use the Device Manager to look at the various mouse devices. If there are exclamation marks, then something is wrong with that device. Remove and re-install that device.

At last resort, remove all devices from the mouse device list. Next, restart Windows with the trackball plugged in.

You will have to contact the computer manufacturer for information on how to disable your Track Pad or buy our

----------------

Uninstall all mouse drivers, plug SAM into your PS2 port and restart the computer. Windows should then
recognize the SAM.
----------------

My middle button does not drag-lock when you Swap Mouse Buttons.

First install the Maxyz software (we can email the software if you do not have it).
Click on the Maxyz Icon in your System Tray.
Click on the Dynamics Tab and choose Swap Mouse Buttons and OK.
Now, open up a text document for testing.
Hover over the end of a word and Click the Red Button.
Now, Click the Green Button.
Move the Trackball to the Left and you will see the word being Highlighted.
Click on Any button to finish.
You should now have a highlighted word.

Another workaround is to turn on StickyKeys in Accessibility options, so
that user can single click on beginning point of drag in a text area,
then hit Shift and StickyKeys will hold it down, then single click on
destination, and in-between text should get highlighted.

If you are using one of the old gray SAMs, and it was a serial device,
and *you* have added a PS2 adapter, then that will not work.

1) Is your SAM multi-colored or gray?
2) What connector is at the end of its cable.
3) Where are you trying to plug it in, to the PS2 port (round) or a
serial port (9 pin D)?
--------------------

I cannot get the SAM trackball to work.

It should work, if you have a generic mouse driver on the system.  Are
you plugging into the serial or the PS2 port?

Check what driver you are using.  It should be Standard Serial or
Standard PS2.  (Start menu, then Settings, then Control Panel, then
double click on Mouse.  Click on the General or Settings tab.)

You can always call 949-582-2572 from in front of the computer, 9-5 CA time.
------------------

I'm trying to get the SAM trackball to work with my Thinkpad 600.

Are you saying that the SAM-Trackball, with PS2 adapter, just doesn't
work on your Thinkpad 600 PS2 port?

And you've tried the < The driver is set as a PS2/Trackpoint driver. >

We would add the <Standard PS2 port mouse> using Add New Hardware.
----------------

When installing SAM trackball, will this "delete" or override other current drivers installed or cause a conflict?

You do not need to install any software for the SAM-Trackball, just as the instructions and the disk
state.
---------------

What type of device is the trackball.

SAM-Trackball is an MS-compatible mouse device and will run anywhere an MS-compatible mouse will run.
It has both serial and PS2 connectors.
--------------

Does the SAM Trackball work with USB for both platforms?

We already offer a SAM-Trackball for Mac - USB.  It also works on PC because Win 95 (more recent

------------

I need to know if the PC version of your SAM Trackball will work with Funny Sounds & Faces.

I just tested them and they are A-OK (they should be since the switch
inputs are simply 'paralleling' the buttons, which are *true* mousedown/mouseup events.
------------

Can I run both Mouse and SAM-Trackball while using Windows 2000?

Yes. You will need to plug the SAM-Trackball into your USB port. We sell a PS/2 to USB Adapter for $20. If you purchase a SAM along with the adapter, then the price is only $10.
